On a Friday night in mid-July, Andy and I took a huge bowl of popcorn Emily had left for us and headed into the living room to watch a movie. We’d had Bob hook up an old laptop of Andy’s to the big-screen TV so we could control browsing by voice.
We paged through lists of options on Netflix.
“There.” I nodded my chin at the screen. “Love Actually. Let’s watch that.”
Andy groaned. “Are you kidding me? Why don’t you just stick a fork in my eye?”
“Oh, is that too chick flick for you, Mr. Manly Man? We’ve watched every Marvel, zombie, and Bond movie twice now. I’m ready for something that doesn’t involve Spandex or eating brains, and I swear if you get that Bond theme in my head again, I’ll have to hurt you.”
“Fine, but there are other options. What about a TV series?”
“What about Love Actually? It’s supposed to be funny, and I’ve never seen it. Everyone talks about it. It’s a gap in your pop-culture education if you haven’t watched it at least once.”
“I never watched Little Mermaid either,” Andy pointed out.
“Well maybe you should!” I teased. “I’ve heard there’s some deep subtext in that.”
Andy scooped up a few kernels of popcorn with his mitt and tossed them at my face. “Ha-ha.”
“Come on, let’s try it. If we don’t like it, we can turn it off.”
“Yeah, okay,” he grumbled. But I could tell he was objecting just because he thought he should.
We started the movie. It wasn’t bad. Pretty funny, really, with all those awkward, pining couples. Andy and I laughed at the bit about the porn movie stand-ins. But the movie gave me the feels, which was embarrassing. I couldn’t help the longing, though, especially with Andy slouched on the couch next to me. The sun went down outside, and the movie played on, now the only glow in the room.
The kissing scene between Laura Linney and Rodrigo Santoro . . . God, it was so passionate. It hurt my chest. I rubbed at my sternum absently with my wrist. I realized this movie had been a bad idea after all. Note to self: no more romances for the rest of the summer. I couldn’t go there. It made me want things, feel things, that were epically impossible. Like a life with Andy. Like some awkward-yet-brave confession of love and then things magically working out. Goddamn it.
As soon as the movie was over, I stood up and faked a yawn. “Man, I’m wiped. I’m goin’ to bed.”
“Wait a minute.” Andy looked up at me from the couch, his face pursed in a frown.
“What?”
“Sit down a second.”
I didn’t want to, but if I resisted, he’d want to know why. So I went over and flicked up the light switch, hoping the glare would chase away what I was feeling. Then I sat back down on the couch. “So?”
“Hey, um . . . that movie reminded me of something I’ve been thinking about . . .”
I waited, no clue where Andy was going with this.
